Open role, Inner Data
BI Developer
Cockpits & Visualisation
The difference between a dashboard and a cockpit. Data modelling, BigQuery and reporting that a board can act on.
Modelling, cockpits and reporting people actually use
Inner Data is a collaborative area, with many people sharing their methodologies and knowledge, so you should be ready to share your ideas and solutions with your team.
Most reporting fails the same way: everything available, arranged prettily, answering nothing. We build cockpits instead, following our own Metrics Compass: four to seven metrics per view, at least one per funnel stage, each with an owner and a target, and usually two views on one model, a strategic one for the board and a tactical one for the marketing team.
The visible layer is the smaller half of the job. Underneath it sits the modelling, the joins, the definitions and the refresh logic that decide whether a number can be trusted at all. You will spend real time in BigQuery and SQL, not only in the reporting tool. A report that only describes the past is half a deliverable: we expect the insight next to the number, and, where the data supports it, the leading indicator rather than the post-mortem. Like everyone here, you will be judged on the marginal value you add to the company and to the projects you touch.
What you will actually do
- Data ModellingDesign the model behind the report: sources, joins, grain, and metric definitions that hold up when two teams read them differently.
- Pipelines & TransformationBuild and maintain the transformations that feed reporting, in SQL on BigQuery, with documentation someone else can follow.
- Cockpit DesignTurn a business question into a view with a small number of metrics, each owned and each with a target, rather than a wall of charts.
- VisualisationBuild in Looker Studio and Power BI, with visual choices that serve reading speed rather than decoration.
- Insight & PredictionGo past describing what happened. Say what it means, what it is likely to do next where the data supports a call, and what someone should do about it. A chart with no reading attached is unfinished work.
- Metric GovernanceKeep definitions consistent across clients and reports, and be the person who notices when the same word means two things.
- Performance & CostKeep queries and refreshes fast and affordable, which on BigQuery is the same conversation.
- Data QualityValidate what arrives, catch what breaks, and make failures visible rather than silent.
- Client WorkUnderstand what a client is trying to decide, and build for that decision. Present the result and defend the numbers in it.
- Business Collective IntelligenceTake part in our Business Collective Intelligence, so that what you learn on one client becomes usable by everyone else rather than staying in your head or in one report.
- Team ContributionShare methodology and improve the analytics practice collectively, which is how Inner Data works.
Technical & platform skills
- Experience
- 2 to 4 years in business intelligence, analytics engineering or data analysis.
- SQL
- Strong SQL, comfortably beyond select and join: window functions, CTEs, and the sense to know when a query is doing something expensive.
- Data modelling
- Understanding of how to structure data for analysis, and why a badly chosen grain poisons everything downstream.
- Visualisation
- Hands-on with at least one of Looker Studio or Power BI, and willingness to work in both.
- Cloud data warehouse
- Experience with BigQuery, or with another warehouse and the appetite to move to it.
- Business translation
- Ability to take a vague business question and come back with the metric that answers it.
- AI literacy
- Literacy in Tech and AI subjects, and sophisticated use of AI platforms in the analytics workflow, both with efficiency and security: writing and reviewing SQL, documenting a model, drafting the reading of a chart, always verified before it reaches a client.
- Languages
- Fluent Portuguese and solid English.
Behavioral skills
- Kindness
- At Wise Pirates we promote and admire kindness, independently of rhythm, intensity and efficiency.
- Curiosity
- You want to understand why something behaves the way it does, and you keep asking after the first answer.
- Ownership
- Accountability for what you deliver and for what you promise a client.
- Collaborative Spirit
- Proactive in working across multi-disciplinary teams, sharing knowledge rather than holding it.
- Analytical Mindset
- Capable of putting data first and obsessed with insight building, always with client satisfaction and business results in mind.
- AI Readiness
- Interest and fluency in using AI as a partner to deliver efficient value, respecting security and privacy regulations.
- Results-Oriented Zeal
- An unwavering commitment to the client’s bottom line, pushing boundaries to chase the best overall performance and business goals.
Not required. Noticed.
- Additional years of experience beyond the range above, for a broader remit and more ownership over how the discipline is run.
- Marketing and media data specifically: GA4 exports, ad platform schemas, attribution tables.
- dbt or a similar transformation framework.
- Python for data processing or automation.
- Looker, the modelling layer rather than Looker Studio.
- Dataform, Dataflow, Composer or other GCP data tooling.
- Metric trees: decomposing a top metric into drivers someone can act on.
- Composite business metrics such as blended or omnichannel ROAS with offline revenue.
- Reverse ETL and pushing audiences back into activation platforms.
- Working under formal governance, ISO 27001 or similar.
- Statistics or forecasting beyond descriptive reporting.
- Experience teaching or enabling client teams to use what you built.
